All-New Subaru Outback: Ready For What The Wilderness Demands
Design – Stylish Capability With A Tougher Edge
The design of the all-new Subaru Outback begins with a simple idea: make adventure feel even more natural. On the outside, it signals a bold new direction – elevating its rugged DNA with a tougher, more assertive look shaped for the real world. The exterior has been completely reimagined with stronger proportions, a more upright posture and bolder surfacing that immediately projects capability.
The front fascia has been reshaped with a broader stance and vertically stacked LED headlamps that anchor each corner, emphasising the Outback’s height, width and readiness for any journey. Scratch-resistant, aerodynamic cladding enhances durability while subtle body-coloured accents and a larger, more defined grille amplify its rugged appeal. From the side, the Outback maintains its signature wagon-like practicality but introduces a more angular, purposeful profile that reinforces its strength and versatility. A flatter roofline supports improved cargo usability, while a wider rear pillar contributes to its sense of stability, particularly on rougher terrain.
At the rear, a new taillight signature delivers a lifted, wider visual presence that strengthens the Outback’s stance. The steeper rear glass angle improves usable cargo space – ideal for everyday practicality and weekend escapes. Finishing touches such as the proud ‘OUTBACK’ nameplate beneath Subaru’s six-star badge and the clean embossed ‘SUBARU’ mark on the lower fascia create a modern, uncluttered look.
Every line and surface have been shaped with intention, reflecting the Outback’s evolution from capable crossover to a more confident, more traditional SUV form.
Outback Wilderness tougher by nature
Making its Australian debut, Outback Wilderness takes the seventh-generation Outback’s adventurous design and turns the heat up. It builds on the rugged stance of the core range with a more assertive, functional look that clearly sets it apart on the road and on the trail. Exclusive exterior elements, including matte black mirrors, expanded cladding, a unique front bumper and signature Subaru grille, underline its tougher intent from every angle.
Anodised copper-look accents on the roof rails, fog lamp surrounds and rear detailing highlight Wilderness-specific functionality, signalling where you can secure gear and how the vehicle is meant to be used. Combined with its higher ground clearance and extra durable finishes, Wilderness looks exactly as capable as it is engineered to be – a visibly adventure-ready Outback designed to venture confidently into places most SUVs simply will not venture.
Subaru Outback Wheels and tyres
Every Outback variant ride on 18-inch alloy wheels, with distinct designs depending on the grade to visually reinforce each model’s character. Tyres have been selected to deliver a balance of comfort, on-road performance and efficiency, while providing dependable grip across a variety of road surfaces.
Tyres are Bridgestone Alenza H/L33 (225/60 R18 100V), chosen to complement Outback’s blend of everyday usability, all-weather confidence and long-distance touring comfort.
All four wheels are fitted with a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) for added reassurance, and every variant carries a full-size spare wheel and tyre.
Subaru Outback Engine & Powertrain
Powertrain development for the seventh-generation Subaru Outback focuses on delivering relaxed, confident performance with smarter efficiency and improved refinement. Non-Wilderness variants feature a revised 2.5-litre direct-injection Subaru Boxer engine, while Outback Wilderness stands apart with an exclusive 2.4-litre turbocharged Subaru Boxer engine – giving customers a clear choice between dependable all-round performance and a more powerful option that matches Wilderness’ enhanced, adventure-ready capability.
2.5-litre direct-injection Subaru Boxer Engine
Non-Wilderness variants are powered by a revised 2.5-litre naturally aspirated direct-injection Subaru Boxer engine, tuned to deliver smooth, usable torque across every day and adventure driving. A high level of thermal efficiency helps it make smarter use of energy while still feeling responsive and relaxed on the road. Changes to key mechanical elements and the optimised use of aluminium across selected components help reduce weight, improve engine vibration characteristics and lower noise levels. The result is an engine that feels smooth and refined over distance, helping the Outback stay comfortable and composed whether it’s loaded up for a weekend away or tackling the weekday commute.
2.4-litre direct-injection turbocharged Subaru Boxer engine (Wilderness only)
Outback Wilderness is exclusively powered by a 2.4-litre turbocharged Subaru Boxer engine, delivering 194 kW of power1 and 382 Nm of torque1 – resulting in our most powerful SUV ever. Its broad, flat torque curve and responsive boost delivery help provide confident acceleration from low engine speeds, without the abrupt feel of traditional turbo lag. Whether merging or overtaking on the highway, climbing a long incline, flowing along a winding road or simply dealing with day-to-day city and arterial traffic, the engine delivers easy, consistent response that makes driving feel more relaxed and controlled in varied conditions.
Transmission – Lineartronic® CVT
The all-new Outback pairs its Subaru Boxer engines with an enhanced Lineartronic® CVT, tuned to deliver smoother, more natural acceleration and a quieter driving experience. Changes to the converter case and drive plate help reduce vibration and noise, contributing to a drivetrain that feels composed in daily driving and more relaxed on longer journeys.
A next-generation Transmission Control Unit (TCU) provides more precise management of shifting behaviour and improves durability, ensuring consistent, predictable performance in a wide range of conditions. For drivers who want greater control, the transmission features an 8-speed manual mode that allows gear changes via steering-wheel paddles, adding a more engaging feel on winding roads or when towing.
The result is a transmission that works seamlessly with both the 2.5-litre and 2.4-litre turbocharged engines, delivering smooth, confident response while remaining unobtrusive in the background. In Wilderness variants, the high-torque-capable Lineartronic® transmission adopts a revised final reduction ratio, purposefully calibrated to maximise off-road capability by making the most of the increased low-rev output and underpinning Wilderness’ role as the flagship for Outback’s multi-terrain offering.
Next-Generation Chassis & Driving Dynamics
The all-new Subaru Outback rides on a further-evolved Subaru Global Platform (SGP), with improvements designed to deliver greater stability, sharper response and a more refined feel on all surfaces. Structural enhancements increase rigidity while reducing vibration transmission through the cabin, helping the Outback feel more composed in everyday driving and more settled on long journeys.
Suspension tuning has also been updated across the range, with optimised spring and damper characteristics that enhance ride comfort without compromising control. A new dual-pinion electric power steering system provides more natural, precise steering feel, improving confidence on winding roads and when manoeuvring at low speeds.
For Outback Wilderness, exclusive suspension tuning and electronically controlled dampers further elevate capability over uneven terrain, supporting its higher ground clearance and adventure-ready intent.
Subaru Global Platform
The all-new Subaru Outback continues to sit on the Subaru Global Platform, further evolved to enhance dynamic performance, safety and comfort. A full inner frame construction and expanded use of structural adhesives increase body rigidity while helping to reduce weight, so steering inputs and vehicle response feel more unified and the Outback has a secure, settled character on all kinds of roads.
Passive safety has been strengthened through revised body structures and load paths designed to offer better protection in a wider range of collisions, considering both occupants and the other party in an impact. Refinement is also improved, with targeted vibration- and noise-reduction measures contributing to a quieter, more comfortable cabin for everyone on board.
Suspension enhancements
Suspension development for the all-new Outback focuses on improving steering accuracy and response while maintaining everyday comfort. The characteristics of the lower arm bushes have been rebalanced front to rear, reducing unwanted toe variation under load so the front wheels track more faithfully in real-world driving. High-strength material is used for the ball joints to cope with the higher inputs that come with these changes, supporting a more precise, reassuring feel at the steering wheel.
Conventional dampers are fitted front and rear, with dedicated tuning of the damping forces to balance ride comfort and driving stability. The result is a suspension set-up that feels compliant over smaller imperfections yet keeps the body well controlled on country roads, highways and rougher surfaces.
Electronically controlled damper system (Wilderness only)
For the first time in an Outback model and exclusive to Outback Wilderness is a new highly sophisticated electronically controlled damper system that significantly enhances both driving stability and ride comfort, helping the vehicle feel even more composed. The system is based on a control philosophy similar to a “skyhook” approach, aiming to keep the body as stable as possible while the suspension and wheels move to absorb the road surface beneath.
A dedicated control unit mounted under the front seat continuously combines information from a body-mounted angular velocity sensor, acceleration sensors on the left and right front dampers, and the Vehicle Dynamics Control system. It also monitors signals such as body acceleration, body roll and pitch angles, steering angle, vehicle speed, brake pressure, engine torque and damper acceleration. Using this data, it varies the damping force in real time to suit the road and driving conditions.
This system works in concert with X-Mode and Wilderness’ unique suspension tuning to deliver a set-up that is seamlessly calibrated for off-road environments. The suspension can absorb small bumps and surface irregularities while firmly controlling larger body movements such as roll, delivering a more settled, even ride with minimal swaying. In practice, this means Outback Wilderness can feel even more comfortable and composed on rough tracks while remaining stable and controlled when the pace increases or the road turns twisty.
Steering precision
The all-new Subaru Outback adopts Subaru’s latest dual-pinion electric power steering system, as seen in WRX and more recently on the new-generation Forester. Developed to deliver stress-free driving with a more premium, sporty feel, the system separates the shafts used by the steering motor and the driver. By isolating the resistance of the motor input shaft, friction on the driver’s steering shaft is reduced, allowing smoother, more linear torque transmission. The result is a direct, natural steering response with no sense of delay, helping Outback feel precise and easy to place on the road – from low-speed manoeuvres in town to flowing country roads and long-distance highway driving.
Braking performance
As with the previous model, the all-new Outback uses an electric brake booster, which helps the brakes respond more quickly and smoothly when driver assistance systems such as Pre-Collision Braking and Adaptive Cruise Control step in. This means the car can react faster and more precisely if a vehicle, cyclist or pedestrian appears suddenly in front.
Subaru has also moved to copper-free brake pads on the all-new Outback, helping reduce the impact of brake dust on the environment while still delivering the stopping performance you expect.
The brake pedal itself has been carefully tuned so it feels natural and predictable – the more you press, the more braking you get, in a smooth, progressive way. A revised pedal feel structure helps it remain solid and consistent, making it easier to judge your braking whether you are in stop–start traffic or slowing from highway speeds.
Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive
A hallmark of Subaru SUVs, Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is standard across the Outback range and remains one of the brand’s core differentiators. Its longitudinal layout and low centre of gravity create a balanced, stable platform, while constant drive to all four wheels helps maximise traction in changing conditions. The result is confident, predictable control on sealed roads, gravel, wet surfaces and off-road terrain.
This AWD architecture also underpins the Outback’s broader capability. X-Mode works in tandem with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive to optimise traction on low-grip surfaces, while Outback Wilderness builds further on this foundation with unique hardware and tuning that elevate capability even further.
Enhanced Active Torque Split AWD system
In the new model, a refined Active Torque Split AWD (ACT-4) system delivers more precise control over how drive is distributed between the front and rear wheels. By more closely matching torque delivery to the driving situation, it enhances steering response, line-tracing, straight-line stability and traction, helping the Outback feel more predictable and behave as the driver intends, from urban streets to rougher roads.
Ride Comfort And Cabin Refinement
Ride comfort has been improved across the all-new Outback thanks to the increased rigidity of the Subaru Global Platform, optimised suspension tuning and targeted noise and vibration reduction measures. The body now absorbs vibrations more effectively, while improved damping and reduced flex help the vehicle feel more stable and settled on long journeys.
Inside the cabin, the use of high-damping materials and refined sound insulation contributes to lower noise levels, creating a quieter, more relaxed environment for both driver and passengers.
To further support comfort over distance, Outback adopts seat structures specifically designed for long drives and to reduce the impact of road shake:
- Pelvis-supporting seats help stabilise the sacrum area, reducing the transmission of vibrations to the head and enhancing comfort during body roll or when travelling over uneven surfaces.
- The seat-to-chassis mounting structure has been revised so the seat rail is mounted directly to the chassis rather than via a separate bracket. This increases rigidity, improves vibration damping and reduces seat sway.
Quieter cabin
The all-new Outback also introduces specific measures to further reduce wind and road noise:
- For the first time on Outback, the roof rail shape has been reprofiled to help reduce wind noise, enhancing cabin quietness at highway speeds.
- The inner door lining sealing covers have been changed from conventional PE sheets to resin, reducing gaps and minimising wind leakage noise, which further improves overall cabin refinement.
Recreational Capability
The all-new Outback has been engineered to give drivers the confidence to explore further, with real capability built into every variant. X-Mode helps optimise traction on low-grip surfaces such as mud, snow, steep gravel or uneven terrain, adjusting throttle, transmission and braking control to suit the conditions. With a minimum ground clearance for naturally aspirated variants increased to 220 mm2 (from 213 mm in the previous model), the Outback is ready for camping tracks, rural roads and off-road use without compromising everyday comfort or efficiency.
X-Mode works in concert with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and the refined Active Torque Split AWD system, helping the vehicle maintain composure when surfaces change suddenly or when the terrain becomes more demanding.
Wilderness – enhanced adventure capability
Outback Wilderness takes Subaru’s all-terrain engineering to an even higher level, with capability upgrades designed specifically for tougher, more remote environments. Increased minimum ground clearance and revised approach, ramp breakover and departure angles help the vehicle clear obstacles and uneven surfaces with greater ease. A unique suspension tune and the exclusive electronically controlled damper system work together to keep the body stable on rough ground while maintaining comfort on long journeys.
Key off-road specs for Outback Wilderness includes:
- Minimum ground clearance2: 240 mm (highest ever offered on an Outback)
- Approach angle: 20°
- Ramp breakover angle: 21.2°
- Departure angle: 23.6°
Wilderness also features dual-mode X-Mode, giving drivers greater control across a broader range of surfaces. In addition to the standard Snow/Dirt mode, a deeper Snow/Mud setting allows for more controlled wheel slip, helping the vehicle maintain momentum through softer, more challenging terrain.
Add in hard wearing exclusive exterior finishes and its 2.4-litre turbocharged Subaru Boxer engine, Outback Wilderness delivers the highest level of off-road capability ever offered in a Subaru SUV – purpose-built for Australians who want a vehicle ready for off-road adventure.
Interior Design & Materials
The interior of the all-new Subaru Outback has been designed to feel welcoming, refined and genuinely comfortable for every occupant. Guided by the ‘Clean Line’ design concept, the cabin creates a sense of space and clarity, with simple horizontal forms and well-considered surfaces that make the interior feel calm, modern and intuitive from the moment you step inside.
Materials and touchpoints have been carefully selected to lift both the look and the feel of the cabin. Passive safety
Strengthened body structure
The Outback’s body has been further reinforced to help protect occupants in a wide range of impact scenarios.
- A revised front bumper beam layout and added collision sub-frame help manage crash energy more effectively.
- A new collision gusset broadens the load path during a frontal impact, helping to reduce damage to the opposing vehicle.
- Ultra-high-tensile steel and hot-press materials have been added in key areas including the outer side sill and lower rear door beam, improving side-impact protection.
Airbag protection
The all-new Outback is equipped with nine SRS airbags10. For the first time in an Outback, a far-side airbag has been introduced. This helps reduce the risk of injury caused by occupants moving toward each other or hard interior surfaces during a side collision, offering an additional layer of protection on the non-impact side.
