Audi SQ2 QUATTRO 2021 Launch Review

WE DRIVE THE NEW AUDI SQ2 ON ITS LAUNCH

Ever since Audi launched the Q2 in 2017 we have been waiting for the SQ2 version and its finally here. Audi SQ2 is priced from $64,400 MLP* and is packed with heaps of standard equipment as well as a powerful 2.0L TFSI engine.

Audi has a strong presence in the sports SUV segments with the following:

The real appeal of the SQ2 is that is affordable for many buyers.

Audi SQ2 Engine and Drivetrain

This is the beating heart of the SQ2. The 2.0L TFSI engine that produces power of 221kW @ 5,300 – 6,500 rpm and torque of 400Nm @ 2,000 – 5,200 rpm.

This runs through a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission and the legendary quattro all-wheel drive system. S sport suspension and progressive steering ensure handling is astonishingly good for a compact SUV. It is nimble, quick and compliant.

Driving the SQ2 is simply a bundle of fun.

It will run from 0-100kmh in 4.9 seconds and top out at a governed 250kmh. All the while drinking fuel at an ADR rate of 7.7L/100K

It also comes with Audi drive select allowing the driver to choose between various drive modes depending on the terrain or mood.

Audi SQ2 External Style

Coming at the same time as the refreshed Q2 look, the SQ2 adds a number of stylish enhancements

Exterior design highlights include distinctive 19-inch alloy wheels and Matrix LED headlights with dynamic indicators/light sequences and high-beam assist. Red brake calipers, quad tailpipes and the unique exterior styling add to the aesthetic appeal.

The SQ2 is available in a range of 9 exterior colours and two interior colour combinations.

The style continues inside the SQ2. First thing you notice are the sport front seats in Fine Nappa leather with diamond patterned stitching, S embossing and contrasting seat colours. It stands out and I actually really like it.

In front of the driver sits the S sport leather steering wheel framing the 12.3 inch Audi virtual cockpit with S specific display. It’s a now familiar feature on Audis and a welcome one.

Other design features that I like are the light graphic inlays and the contrast stitching and borders.

For the audiophiles there is a 705W Bang & Olufsen premium sound system, however the sound of the exhaust is what most will revel in.

The MMI interface is controlled by a dial system that has both advantages and disadvantages but ultimately isn’t as good as the latest version released in the Q5 earlier this year.

Audi SQ2 Quick Thoughts

It is no secret that I am a big fan of sport SUVs and many of the Audi range in particular. The SQ7 and SQ5 have both been previous winners of the Sports SUV COTY Award.

The SQ2 continues this legacy with the edgy SQ2. It is fast, nimble, compliant and simply FUN to drive.

The feeling you get when driving is that it becomes part of your personality. Driver engagement is excellent and yet it will happily potter around without fuss.

At around $64,400 MLP* it is actually very good value and there is little else similar on the market to compare it to.

A more in depth drive review is coming in a few weeks when we have the vehicle for a longer time.

*Manufacturer List Pricing [MLP] – excludes dealer delivery and government statutory charge and options.
