Should I buy and electric car

Electric Cars are they worth buying

Electric Car – I get asked often by listeners “should I buy an electric car” and the answer is almost always yes and no.

As with all car purchases it’s all about what purpose you want the car for.

Electric cars are particularly good at reducing local driving emissions and pollution around cities and suburbs. The description of them as zero emission vehicles is simply incorrect due to the emissions caused by construction.

For many drivers the daily commute is often less than 100km. Theoretically they can drive for a few days then recharge. Sounds good, providing your garage isn’t like many and that is full of stuff so often no room for a car for overnight charging.

The other main issue with EVs is range anxiety. This is only an issue if you want to travel longer distances, then it becomes a major issue. How long will you have to wait to recharge on the trip, will the charger be compatible. Will it work when I get there, how much time will recharging add to my trip and many more questions.

Yes many EVs now have an acceptable range of around 400kms, Great for Asia, Europe or England, not so much for Australia. There is also an argument that developing extended range EVs is a waste of resources. There are excellent alternatives, such as Hydrogen FCEV or PHEVs or simply hybrid vehicles.

So the answer is yes and no, it all comes down to what purpose you want the car for
