Hyundai Veloster Street Review

Available exclusively to Australian’s, the Hyundai Veloster Street certainly makes a lasting impression with its Sonic Silver metallic paint, 18” alloy wheels with red inserts, red leather interior and aggressive sporty styling.

The Veloster Street gives you the visual sport presence and cool factor without the extra goods under the hood. The benefit of this? It is cheaper than the SR Turbo version and also means the sporting style is available to those younger drivers who cannot drive turbocharged engines or don’t want the higher insurance premiums. Although it is a shame that the styling doesn’t match the performance expectation – you really do want that turbo grunt! What the Street has inherited from its Turbo sibling is the tauter suspension, which is significantly noticeable.

The Street version was adapted from the concept car on display at the 2012 Australian International Motor Show and is mated to the base Veloster’s 103kW/166Nm naturally aspirated 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and available in either a six-speed manual or six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Buyers also get the confidence of Hyundai’s including a five-year unlimited kilometre warranty and wallet-friendly fixed price servicing ($249 per annum for three years).

So where does the Street variant sit in the Veloster range? Basically it sits above the base model but below the Plus and SR Turbo versions. The Street comes with all the goodies that Hyundai has jammed into the base model including Bluetooth® connectivity with handsfree phone operation and audio streaming, AUX/USB audio input with iPod® compatibility, cruise control with steering wheel mounted audio and phone controls, 5 star ANCAP safety rating, rear view camera (integrated into 7″ LCD), rear park assist, automatic dusk sensing headlamps, day/night rear view mirror and front sports bucket seats. It also boasts a thumping seven speakers, a sub-woofer and external amp that offer excellent clarity.

Hyundai revolutionised the coupe industry with the introduction of the three door Veloster with 4 actually usable seats. The response from motoring enthusiasts and the public alike was excellent and the Street is yet another fantastic edition to the Veloster range.
