BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo in Australia

Subaru Levorg 20 STI Sport

BMW 6 Series GT BMW is introducing the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo range to Australian buyers. Continuing the sport luxury theme established in the 3 Series GT and 5 Series GT, the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo is yet another niche product from the master of niches BMW.

“The new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo features a lot of technology we have seen rolling out in the BMW 5 Series and 7 Series in recent times,” said BMW Group Australia CEO, Marc Werner.

“With a fresh take on exterior styling that is lower and longer, a generous and comfortable interior, leading-edge connectivity and high standard specification, the 6 Series Gran Turismo is a fantastic family proposition.”

BMW 6 Series GT range*:

BMW 630i GT: $123,500*
BMW 640i xDrive GT: $148,900*

Aerodynamic exterior aids function and form

Thanks to BMW’s Efficient LightWeight programme, the new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo is up to 105kg lighter than the predecessor model, including the addition of xDrive in the 640i variant.

This thoroughly modern platform strategically deploys a mix of high-quality materials including high-strength steel and extensive use of aluminium.

Making the most of this rigid, lightweight structure is a newly-designed exterior that cuts through the air more effectively. Aerodynamically the 6 Series GT employs the latest interpretation of the BMW Active Kidney Grille. With this system, the grille can close or open depending on vehicle need. For example, it will close at a cruise to maximise efficiency, but can open for additional cooling as required.

Air Breathers situated behind the front wheels further aid aerodynamic efficiency. Air passing through the front air dams is channelled through the air breathers, creating an ‘air curtain’ around the wheel wells and further smoothing the air flow.

All of this aids in Australian-specification 6 Series GTs achieving a drag co-efficient of only 0.28Cd, 0.02Cd less than the predecessor model.

High-quality interior maximises comfort, technology and versatility

The 6 Series GT interior exudes quality, from its high-end trims to its technology and specification.

Finished in Dakota (630i) or Nappa (640i xDrive) upholstery, the 6 Series GT cabin is spacious and filled with natural light, thanks to a standard panorama glass sunroof.

Luggage capacity has improved appreciably (by 110 litres) while the 40:20:40 through loading system and automatic tailgate operation further aid versatility.

BMW’s innovative iDrive6 infotainment system is standard. Operated via a 10.25-inch touchscreen, this customisable interface can also be controlled via the traditional iDrive rotary dial or by natural voice control.

iDrive6 is complemented by a 12.3-inch multi-functional instrument display screen. Offering a range of different appearances, this customisable interface integrates with the latest Head-Up Display system to centralise vital vehicle information to the driver.

Convenience features such as wireless smartphone charging, four 12-volt and two USB sockets and extended Bluetooth functionality make any trip more comfortable.

BMW’s latest-generation semi-autonomous technologies, pioneered in the criticallyacclaimed new 5 Series, are also included across the 6 Series GT range.

Driving Assistant Plus features the following innovations:

Parking Assistant Plus is also standard and features:

Optimised performance, dynamics and and efficiency delivered via lightweight platform and latest engine technologies

As well as the EfficientLightweight-inspired platform, the new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo benefits from the latest BMW TwinPower Turbo range of petrol engines.

The 630i GT is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine. It generates an impressive 190kW and some 400Nm for an effortless combination of low-rev response and strong acceleration. Fuel economy is tested at 7.0L/100km on the combined cycle.

Underneath the 640i xDrive bonnet sits a thoroughly modern take on a BMW classic configuration: an inline six-cylinder petrol engine. Utilising a twin-scroll turbocharger, the 3.0- litre ‘six’ generates 250kW and 450Nm of torque while using only 8.5L/100km on the combined cycle.

To ensure the 6 Series Gran Turismo range drives like a BMW, Adaptive 2-axle Air Suspension with dynamic damper control is fitted across the range. This system offers an adaptable driving experience that provides exceptional ride quality with responsive handling.

Three modes are featured – ECO PRO, COMFORT and SPORT, the latter allowing the vehicle to lower itself by 10mm. In addition, the vehicle can be manually raised 20mm for slow-speed manoeuvres (up to 35km/h).

Fitted as standard to the 640i GT is the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system – this is the first non-M Performance BMW passenger vehicle to house this feature in Australia.

From a basic 40:60 per cent front:rear drive split, the system can send drive across the entire driving range: from 0:100 per cent to 100:0, for maximum traction in all situations.

Augmenting this is the Integral Active Steering system. Taken from the 7 Series and 5 Series options list, Integral Active Steering is standard on 640i xDrive and optional on 630i.

Working in conjunction with BMW’s electrically-assisted variable active steering, Integral Active Steering steers the rear wheels in opposition to the front axle at speeds up to 60km/h, enhancing manoeuvrability. Once 60km/h is achieved the rear wheels angle in the same phase as the fronts, improving stability.

Executive Drive (optional on 640i GT xDrive) adds active anti-roll bars for the complete combination of dynamics and ride quality.

Premium specification comes as standard

Building from the already impressive 5 Series, the BMW 6 Series GT sets a high specification standard.

The 630i is equipped with the following equipment highlights:

Condition Based Servicing

All maintenance requirements for the BMW 6 Series GT range is controlled by the Condition Based Servicing (CBS) system.

With CBS, sensors and advanced algorithms monitor and calculate the conditions in which a vehicle is used, including mileage, time elapsed since its last service, fuel consumption and how a vehicle is driven. Based on the information captured, maintenance requirements are determined, identifying whether an annual vehicle inspection or oil service is due.

Selected BMW service and maintenance costs can be covered by a single, one-off advance payment with BMW Service Inclusive (BSI), which is available in two packages: Basic or Plus.
