All new Hyundai Veloster review

2012 Hyundai Veloster Plus
Hyundai Motor Company Australia has launched the latest addition to the Hyundai range – the all-new Veloster. The Veloster challenges conventional design theories, offering a unique forward-hinged third door for easy rear-seat access located on the passenger side of the car and a single door on the driver’s side.
2012 Hyundai Veloster Plus
The Veloster echoes the company’s ‘Fluidic Design’ language and marries the style of a coupe with the functionality of a hatchback. Veloster offers an exciting alternative in the sports-car segment. Featuring the latest Hyundai advanced technologies, Veloster balances comfort, space safety and fuel efficiency with a focus on fun.
As part of the Design concept Veloster combines the style of a coupe and the functionality of a hatchback, while also incorporating an additional kerb-side door. Hyundai’s fresh take implements a conventionally hinged rear (third) door on the kerb-side of the Veloster, providing safe and ready access to the surprisingly spacious rear seats. The kerb-side rear door handle is hidden to maintain an uncompromised visual flow.

The Veloster’s centre stack fascia and controls resemble a sport bike fuel tank with air vents inspired by motorcycle tailpipes and a floor console mirroring the seat of a bike. The interior is finished with modern metallic-look accents around the centre console, door handles, air vents and gear stick.
The Supervision Instrument Cluster (Veloster +models), featuring Hyundai’s signature blue back-lighting, provides greater clarity for the driver while a large centre display (blue/white dot matrix) provides a wide array of trip information for the driver.
The cabin space reflects a stylish, modern and fun-to-drive feel while remaining practical by delivering conveniences such as a multi-point lighting system and power-touch window controls for all windows, with driver side new ‘anti-pinch’ safety technology. There are numerous stowage options for front and rear passengers.
A striking two-piece panorama glass roof features in the Veloster + models and becomes the focal point of the light and airy interior.
Sports bucket seats and a power driver’s seat (Veloster + models) incorporating lumbar control provide comfortable seating position.

The latest in multimedia technology includes a large 7″ LCD touch screen displaying all information and enabling occupants to watch DivX movies when the vehicle is stationary. A ‘Dimension’ Premium Audio system further enhances the in-car entertainment experience, incorporating an in dash DviX MP3 CD player and AM/FM radio tuner, four speakers, a centre speaker, two tweeters, and a subwoofer all powered by an external amplifier. Additional features such as USB / Auxiliary connectivity with digital iPod®compatibility and Bluetooth® phone and audio streaming are also standard across the range.
All driver management systems, including audio, phone, trip computer, speed limiter and cruise control, are operated with steering wheel mounted finger-tip convenience. Twin paddle-shift automatic transmission controls, for enthusiasts who enjoy sport-style manual gear selection, are standard on the automatic variants.
Driver and passenger comforts include; trip computer with instant and average fuel consumption, distance to empty, trip distance, average speed & elapsed time readout, tyre pressure monitoring, height adjustable front active head restraints, height adjustable rear head restraints and front sports bucket seats and climate control air conditioning (Veloster +models). Driver comfort is enhanced with tilt and telescopic (reach) adjust steering wheel, electric powered driver’s seat with electric lumbar support (Veloster + models), and driver one-touch auto-down window incorporating anti-pinching safety feature.
The Veloster security system includes; central locking, engine immobiliser, Hyundai Active Locking Operation (HALO) including speed sensing auto door locking, auto-door unlock and inside door unlock function, impact sensing door unlock system and keyless entry with alarm.

The Veloster is powered by the all-new Gamma 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine, the smallest Hyundai engine to use Petrol (Gasoline) Direct Injection (GDI). The use of direct injection technology in the Gamma engine helps deliver an estimated combined fuel economy of just 6.4litres per 100kms*, with low emissions, and high reliability. Economy does not come at the price of power for an engine of its size, with the Veloster putting out peak power of 103 kW @ 6300 RPM and peak torque of 166 Nm @ 4850 RPM.

Hyundai’s commitment to making the Gamma engine extremely fuel efficient continues by pairing it with a standard six-speed manual transmission or an all-new six-speed DCT developed by Hyundai.
Hyundai’s new DCT takes the benefits of a manual transmission, including low fuel consumption and fun driving, and blends them with automatic transmission benefits, such as high comfort levels and smooth shift quality.
The new DCT can be driven like a standard automatic, providing smooth and seamless shifting with the efficiency of a manual transmission. Alternatively, the driver can manually select gears using the steering wheel mounted paddle-shift levers or conventional transmission lever – achieving traditional manual transmission driver involvement, with rapid and responsive gear changing.

Extensive tuning and specific calibration of the suspension system was undertaken in Australia over thousands of kilometres and numerous road conditions to ensure Veloster’s McPherson front strut and V-beam type torsion beam rear axle delivers optimum performance in the unique local conditions.
The Veloster is fitted with front and rear Sachs dampers. The front dampers include rebound springs for better front end responsiveness, which allow sharper and more accurate changes of direction, while the rear dampers are high performance Mono-tubes.
Speed sensitive Motor Driven Power Steering (MDPS) is used on Veloster in-lieu of a conventional hydraulic system utilising an electric motor to enable varying degrees of power assist for different situations. MDPS not only minimises weight and fuel consumption, but allows integration with the Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system. Tuning of the MDPS system was performed in Australia to suit local conditions and driver preferences.
The Veloster achieves the maximum 5-star ANCAP safety rating. Complete with a comprehensive suite of active safety technologies Veloster comes standard with Vehicle Stability Management (VSM), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control System (TCS), ABS with EBD & Brake Assist System (BAS), and Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) on DCT models.
The VSM system integrally manages the active safety features (e.g. ESC, TCS, ABS and EBD) and Motor Driven Power Steering (MDPS) system. VSM enhances directional stability by applying the active safety features as needed and by providing counter steering assistance for the driver, helping the driver steer the vehicle in the correct direction. The implementation of VSM can alleviate the loss of vehicle control which can be experienced whilst applying sudden braking or rapid acceleration under asymmetric (wet/dry) road surface conditions, as well as sudden lane changes.
All variants feature a full host of advanced passive safety features including six airbags as standard; including driver and front passenger, driver and front passenger side (thorax) and full-length curtain airbags, height adjustable front active head restraints, load limiters and height adjustable front seat belts.
For parking with safety and ease, the Veloster is fitted as standard with a reverse camera built into the tailgate handle. Images from the camera are relayed into the 7″ centre console LCD screen for the ultimate in driver convenience.
A rear park assist system is standard on all variants. It operates when parking or manoeuvring the vehicle in confined spaces. Parking sensors mounted on the rear bumper enhance safety by
All-new Veloster is available in two trim levels -Veloster and Veloster + and will be available in a choice of eight modern and vibrant exterior colours including Sunflower, White Crystal, Phantom Black, Vitamin C, Blue Ocean, Green Apple, Sleek Silver and Veloster Red.
All interiors are complimented with a black on black cloth/leatherette (Veloster models) or leather/ leatherette (Veloster + models) combination interior.
